About the Artist

Luc Schravesande B. 2006
Luc is a South African-born representational oil painter. He attended Hilton College in South Africa before completing his education in the UK at Rugby School and the University of the Arts London.
Inspired by 19th-century academic and naturalist painters, his work takes a classical approach, whilst laced with a contemporary flair. His compositions seek a timeless beauty and truth—subtly contemplative, reflective, and melancholic. Unlike a photograph, which tends to flatten an image, Schravesande seeks to transcend this limitation through an exploration of reality in oil paint.
Luc often works from direct observation, under south light. His approach fluctuates between a looser “alla prima” technique, inspiring a short, expressive search to capture the essence of the subject, and a classical, layered approach, building up the composition with thin layers of paint to develop form.
